Flight Free Projects (FFP) has been working closely with smallholder farmers in Wakiso District, central Uganda, to promote agroforestry and confront the growing threat of climate change. Through its impactful tree planting initiative – delivered in partnership with Seniorer uden Grænser (Seniors Without Borders), Denmark – FFP provides free indigenous tree seedlings, empowering farmers to restore ecosystems, diversify their farms, and build lasting climate resilience.
Today, we shine a spotlight on one of our most inspiring beneficiaries, Mr. James Kagwa, a humble yet passionate smallholder farmer from Nabalanga village. A respected Christian elder and a dedicated small-scale farmer for over a decade, James’ journey with FFP is a testament to the power of community-driven environmental change.
“I am so happy about the impact of FFP on my life and my community at large,” he shared, his face lighting up with joy. “A lot has changed, I now receive respect from people in the village. I’ve even become somewhat famous because of the trees I plant, and that makes me truly proud. FFP has given me hope, and I’ve made the decision never to give up on farming and agroforestry.”
James’ pride in his work is infectious. Where others may have seen only dry land and unpredictable seasons, he saw opportunity, especially with the support from FFP. However, his journey hasn’t always been easy.
“With the fluctuating seasons and the high cost of seedlings, yes, I’ve thought of giving up,” he admitted. “The weather is so unpredictable. When it’s hot, it scorches everything. And when it rains, it’s destructive. But I’m just grateful, FFP restored my hope. Their support has made such a positive difference in my life and that of my family.” “I would love it if we could also get planting materials for sugarcane, yams, groundnuts, and beans,” he said hopefully.
James’ story is a powerful reminder that the fight against climate change is deeply personal. It’s not just about planting trees, it’s about restoring dignity, reviving hope, and empowering people like him to take charge of their futures. At FFP, we are proud to walk alongside farmers like James, planting not just seedlings in the soil, but seeds of change and resilience.
